How To Get Clearer Skin With PMD Personal Microderm

AD - This post contains gifted products but all opinions are my own.

Since lockdown has begun, my skin has become dry and full of blemishes. I have been struggling to find a skincare routine that suits my skin and revitalises it. Fortunately, the lovely people at PMD have sent me a personal Microderm to review. I am excited to see if it revitalises my skin and brings it back to its usual self!

What is the Personal Microderm?

The Personal Microderm is a microabrasion kit which sucks away dead skin and blemishes, leaving you with fresh and radiant skin. It is an at-home skin treatment that will leave your skin feeling soft and like-new. The Microderm is like a pen that sucks away your impurities. It lets you control the level of exfoliation with different discs, so you’re getting the treatment your skin needs!

How Does It Work?

Once you have washed your face and dried it, the PMD’s spinning disc deeply exfoliates your skin. You put the PMD to your face, and allow it to suck away the dead skin cells and impurities. The discs are covered in aluminium oxide crystals which deeply exfoliate your skin. It triggers fresh skin cell growth and leaves your skin clear. It also means that your skin is left clean, so it will absorb more of your skincare products, so you may see more of a result from them! Some of the benefits of doing this skincare treatment at home are:

  • It is more affordable than in-clinic microdermabrasion
  • It reduces blemishes and clears pores
  • It minimises fine lines & wrinkles
  • It evens out your skin tone & texture

How Was My Experience?

I was really excited to test this product out as I have been suffering from horrible skin recently. Inside the box, you receive the PMD, 2 different sized caps, 7 discs and the charger. I was really impressed that the kit included different outlet plugs, so you can use your PMD no matter where you travel in the world! This was a nice touch, so you can exfoliate even if you decide to go on holiday. I had the pink PMD, but there are different colours available including light blue and navy!

I started off with the little white disc as recommended. My skin is quite sensitive and gets blotchy with certain products, so I wanted to see how my skin would react. I tested it out on my arm, and it seemed fine. Always test before use to check that your skin can handle the disc. The initial feeling of the PMD being on my skin was quite strange. The suction wasn’t overly strong, so it didn’t hurt as I first thought it might.

After the test, I decided to work my way up the discs. There are 3 different discs to choose from after the white tester disc. They all have their own uses and intensities. There is a smaller and larger disc of each colour, apart from the white one.

  • White disc – For ultra-sensitive skin/skin training
  • Blue disc – For sensitive skin
  • Green disc – For medium strength abrasion
  • Grey disc -?

The image shows the discs that go into the PMD. There is one skinny white disc, 2 grey, 2 light blue and one dark blue disk in the image.

In my box, I also received 2 grey discs. Its use wasn’t on the card that you are supplied with, but I checked on their website and found that it was for very sensitive skin. These are used as a step up from the white disk, before the blue one. You can purchase these discs separately once yours are worn down, which is good because then you don’t have to repurchase the whole product! You can also purchase a red disc which has the maximum strength abrasion or a black disc, which is only used for the body. These weren’t included in the box.

I decided to use the blue disc as I didn’t want to risk it irritating my skin. The smaller disk is used for the face and delicate areas, while the bigger one is for your body or larger surfaces. To use, you need to pull your skin quite tightly. Otherwise, the suction may cause the PMD to stick to your skin. It can be quite irritable and leave you with red marks. I used it across my t-zone and on my cheeks and chin. I find that these are the worst places for blackheads and blemishes. It didn’t hurt, but the suction was quite strong. It was really strange to see all these little white balls remain on my face. I found that this was a combination of dead skin and all the gunk that was in my pores. It was good to know that the product works! You should use a collagen face mask after use for the best results, but moisturising after works just as well for revitalising your skin. Moisturising after use puts back the moisture and vitamins back into your skin.

The image shows the personal microderm in the background, with the 2 clear caps in the middle of the image

I found that it left red marks on my face, so make sure you aren’t going out straight away. These marks didn’t last for too long, but longer than I would have liked. I also found that it didn’t suck out as many blackheads as I would have hoped. It did, however, leave my skin feeling really smooth and clean. This was an amazing feeling because my pores hadn’t felt that clear in a while. My skin felt quite refreshed, and after using moisturiser, found that my skin felt more hydrated than usual. I don’t have wrinkles (Yet!...), so can’t comment on how it reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It did, however, reduce the amount of blotchiness my skin had. I had fewer red patches at the end of my trail, but a lot more while physically using the product!

I continued to use the PMD for 3 weeks. It meant I used the product 3 times because you’re meant to wait 6-7 days between each treatment to let your skin recover. After the 3 weeks, I have found my skin hasn’t been breaking out as much as usual. It has been a lot clearer and smoother. I really enjoyed trailing the PMD, and will continue to use it in the future! The price tag is around £145, which is quite expensive, but it lasts a long time, and the results are quite good. It is a great product and would be cheaper than having this treatment in a clinic. I would recommend using the PMD if you’re looking to have revitalised and newer skin. If I could change one thing, I would make it suck out more blackheads. I was still left with quite a few, especially on my nose and chin. I would have really liked to have seen them disappear, especially as it did a great job at removing the dead skin.

The image shows the rectangular box that the microderm and it's contents came it. It is a white box with a woman on the front

Although it is expensive, for clearer and refreshed skin, I think it is worth the investment. PMD also make other revitalising products at a more affordable price in case having your skin sucked isn’t appealing to you! Have you ever used the PMD, or do you prefer to have your treatments in a clinic? The Personal Microderm would make a great alternative for in-clinic treatments, especially as a lot of them are closed at the moment. Let me know what your thoughts of at-home treatments are in the comments! I’d love to know what your thoughts about the PMD are!

  15. I have one of these ad I was so nervous to try it at firs! I have really sensitive skin and I was a little bit worried it would be too rough. The redness lasted quite a while for me so I tend to use it more on my body. I really like how smooth it makes my legs! x
